T he Chihuahua, the smallest of all breeds, is one of the most popular. Last year he rose to second among United States purebreds-it is estimated that there are several hundred thousand in the country today. If you don't see many of them around, it's probably because they're hiding in their owners' pockets. No dog could be more intelligent and devoted to its master than the Chihuahua, in spite of its small size. Naturally quiet, it is an effective watchdog who will scare away prowlers by its bark, and defend its home to its last breath. Although many owners like to pamper and coddle their Chihuahuas, these toy and teacup dogs are as tough and long-lived as any breed. They will stand up for their rights against any dog, big or small. But they also get along well with any other dogs in the home, cats or birds as well. If you have more than one Chihuahua you will find that they will be devoted friends, and very lonely when separated. Long-coated or smooth, the Chihuahua makes an ideal house pet. It is sensitive to the cold, so likes a warm bed and a warm covering when it goes out in cold weather. Averaging 3 - 5 pounds in weight, and as light as one pound, the Chihuahua comes in many colors. Solid fawn, red, white and black, and blackand- tan are best known in this country, while Chihuahuas marked and splashed with white are preferred in their native Mexico. The rare blues are always highly prized. Smooth or short-coated Chihuahuas are better known, but the long coat variety is becoming increasingly popular, and is otherwise the same delightful dog. If you ever though about raising or owning a delightful Chihuahua for fun or profit... YOU NEED THIS FUN, EXCITING AND SOMETIMES AMUSING PUBLICATION.
